Plain EMS provides 911 Emergency Response services at the EMT-Basic Service Level to the: Village of Plain, Town of Franklin, Town of Bear Creek, Town of Troy and Town of Honey Creek. Our coverage area is approximately 150 square miles.
Plain EMS receives 911 dispatches from the Sauk County Sherriff’s Department Dispatch Center.

Plain EMS is proud to work hand-in-hand with Plain Fire Department. When Plain Fire Department is dispatched for a call, Plain Ambulance also responds. Plain Fire Department assists with EMS calls when requested by EMS Command.
Plain EMS also provides 911 transporting coverage in partnership with Hillpoint First Responders for a portion of their district.

Plain EMS works with multiple other Wisconsin EMS agencies that provide Paramedic level intercepts when indicated by patient condition. These agencies include Reedsburg Ambulance, Baraboo EMS, Waunakee EMS and Middleton EMS.

Plain EMS provides mutual aid to neighboring EMS agencies upon request and when availability allows. This means when our neighbors aren't able to respond to a call for service, we will. Plain EMS also relies on our neighboring services to do the same for us from time-to-time. Requests for mutual aid can be for a number of reasons, such as a lack of staffing, ambulance(s) are already responding to other calls, mechanical difficulties, coverage for department-wide events, and more.

Plain Emergency Medical Service was born in 1972 when three firemen, Louis (Louie) Nachreiner, Bob Schanke, and Bob Young took the Basic EMT course in Spring Green. The trio ran as first responders with the Plain Fire Department. In 1975, a second group of firemen completed EMS training. During this time, the federal government began offering grants to local communities for the purchase of their first ambulance. Through the diligent work of Louie Nachreiner and other members of the community, Plain received the grant. January 1st, 1977 was the first in-service date for the newly purchased Plain Ambulance. Louie Nachreiner was elected as the first EMS Chief, and held that position until retirement in 1985. By the time Louie retired, the service had 17 licensed EMTs on the roster.
Since then, Plain Ambulance has operated 365 days a year, 7 days a week, for 24 hours a day.
